BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek. Their August 31 talks covered political relations, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people contacts. The leaders also reviewed regional conflicts and cooperation in international forums. The meeting continued regular high-level engagement between India and Russia and followed their previous talks during the India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi in December 2025.

India-Russia cooperation stays in focus across trade, energy, defence and diplomacy.

Modi and Putin reviewed progress under the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. Their governments maintain cooperation across defence, civil nuclear energy, space, trade and technology. Economic ties have expanded sharply in recent years, supported by energy trade and other commercial flows. Both sides have also used established bilateral mechanisms to address investment, payments, transport links and market access. The leaders discussed those areas as they assessed the wider state of relations during their meeting in Kyrgyzstan.

The two leaders welcomed results from the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. The commission met in Moscow on August 24. India and Russia have set a goal of reaching $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. Indian government data put two-way trade at $59.86 billion during the 2025-26 financial year. Russian exports to India represented the larger share, reflecting the significant role of energy and other commodities in the commercial relationship.

Regional conflicts feature in leaders’ talks

Regional security also formed part of the discussions between Modi and Putin. The leaders exchanged views on conflicts affecting the Black Sea region and West Asia. India has highlighted the impact of those conflicts on maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers. Modi reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy should guide efforts to resolve disputes. He also renewed support for peace efforts and called for an end to prolonged conflict, while keeping the discussion focused on negotiated solutions.

The meeting also covered cooperation through BRICS, which India chairs in 2026. Modi said India looked forward to welcoming Putin for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13. The gathering will bring together leaders from member countries for discussions on economic cooperation, global governance and other shared priorities. The Bishkek meeting took place less than two weeks before that summit, giving the two leaders another opportunity to review bilateral issues and multilateral coordination.

Economic ties remain a major bilateral focus

India and Russia continue to maintain broad government-level cooperation through regular summits, ministerial meetings and technical working groups. Defence, nuclear energy and space remain established areas of engagement. Trade, fertilisers, technology, innovation and mobility have also gained attention in recent bilateral discussions. Energy remains one of the largest components of commerce between the countries. Both governments continue to use formal dialogue channels to support business ties and manage practical issues affecting cross-border trade and investment.

The Bishkek talks brought those economic and diplomatic issues together in a single bilateral meeting. Modi and Putin reviewed cooperation, discussed ongoing conflicts and addressed coordination through multilateral institutions. Their discussion also came ahead of the scheduled BRICS summit in India. The meeting underscored the breadth of India-Russia relations, which span trade, energy, defence and international diplomacy. It also maintained the pattern of direct engagement between the two leaders as both governments continued work through their existing bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
